Spurs
is dedicated to presenting people, things and places that
uplift and enchant, deepen and inspire, and generally make
life worth living. The articles in this section aren't true
reviews. In our opinion, the only valid reviewers are those
who could do it better-- sing a better song, make a better
movie, write a better book. Such people would be adding constructive
feedback, not criticism. What you'll find here are our reactions
to various artists. We only present artists we feel are worth
listening to and supporting. And we promise not to sing or
play ourselves.
How
did this "column" come into being? It was a feature
of the old Nathan family Holiday Letter, which is the basis
for Spurs Magzine. (When the letter began to resemble a telephone
book, it was time to change formats.) The letter included
descriptions of music that we considered "good"
in an attempt to counteract the prevailing negativity and
mediocrity of popular music. You know, the kind of music that
has people killing each other in mosh pits, O.D.ing outside
clubs, and applauding such fun activities as abuse of women
and every addiction you can think of. We present artists here
that counteract those trends.
When
a piece of art rings true, it activates a chord inside that
vibrates in harmony with the soul of universe-- and produces
deep satisfaction. Most music, writing, or art, never gets
close enough to the core to activate that cord. Most work
activates something shallower, cheaper, more ephemeral. Most
music appeals to one addiction or another. The people We write
about here go straight for the heart and sing there. They
have a message that gives listeners hope and strength. We
crave that pure, sweet note that satisfies. That pure, sweet,
hot note that touches the core. These entertainers hit it
right on.
